The Korean Makgeolli Association was founded in 2013, under the civil law article 4 of the ‘establishment and supervision by corporation approved by minister of food and agriculture’.

The association has its purpose on helping corporations and groups or individuals related to the culture and industrial promotion of rice wine, achieving industrial improvement and to cultivate a desirable culture of rice wine.

Members are composed by individuals and groups who are approved by the board of directors; current manufacturers, including people who are considered helpful in improving rice wine culture.

As a mainstream activity, they exchange information and establish joint businesses with various communities of the society such as manufacturers, sellers and educational institutions to foster the general foundation.

With the first president of the association – Park Sung Ki at the center, the association maintains a cooperative relation with government organizations to improve regulations, and suggest policies in order to secure the competitiveness of rice wine as a representative Korean alcoholic beverage.

They are also forwarding a movement towards registration of the Makgeolli as a UNESCO World Heritage based on its historicity, sociality and functionality so that the quality standard competes with well-known liquors, such as Sake of Japan, Baijiu of China, Wine of France.

“For the last 10 years, we have seen impressive outcomes including general improvement in quality, increase of variations of Makgeolli, due to differentiations in design, packaging, and usage of local agricultural productions.” Bae Hye Jeung, 3rd president of the Association said.

“Since the size of current domestic rice wine industry is relatively small, there are limits in promotion and marketing,” She said, adding “We expect our participation in the Korea–Vietnam Food&Culture Festival as an opportunity to promote exports and globalize Makgeolli.”
